You may only use this service if you are departing from one of the countries in the list below. If, in the 10 days prior to returning to the UK, you transit through a country NOT on this list, you will need to choose a different service (see below for AMBER list countries).

This test detects whether or not you are currently carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

You may have heard this test also referred to as a PCR test.

It detects the presence of genetic material, called RNA, that is specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If you are currently infected with this coronavirus, you will shed virus particles (which contain viral RNA) into your saliva and therefore test positive using our assay.

If you test negative, then you are most likely not currently infected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 (at the time of testing).*

* Important note: a negative test result does not preclude current or later infection and the development of COVID-19 symptoms should not be ignored.

It’s important to be aware that in order to detect the virus, the ‘viral load’ in your system must be of a sufficient level to detect a positive result. For example, if you caught the virus on Monday and gave your sample on the following Tuesday morning, the viral load will not have had sufficient time to build up to detectable levels and therefore you would likely get a negative result, despite carrying coronavirus.

According to current government travel quarantine rules, “a test after 5 days of self-isolation provides materially better results, as it allows time for the virus, should it be present, to incubate, helping reduce the risk of a false negative result.” For this reason, we would advise anyone carrying out a test who wanted to optimise the likelihood that a negative test result is accurate at the time the sample was provided, to self-isolate and provide their sample on day 5 of their isolation or later.

Finally, it is important to note that while the sensitivity levels of PCR tests for detecting coronavirus is very high, no test of this kind is 100% accurate and precautions should still be taken. A negative result should not be used to undertake activities contrary to government advice and anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 should self-isolate, even if a test does not detect coronavirus.

Multiple clinical validation studies have been conducted on the assay used by FitnessGenes, including an analysis of 488 blinded samples tested using the current standard of care assays in two clinical ISO15189/UKAS accredited laboratories.

Diagnostic sensitivity has been established at 98.40%. This means there is a very low likelihood of actually carrying the COVID-19 coronavirus but falsely receiving a negative test result.

Diagnostic specificity has been established at 99.34%. This means there is an extremely low likelihood of receiving a positive test result despite not carrying the COVID-19 coronavirus.

No – this is not an antibody test.

An antibody test assesses whether you have already had COVID-19. It involves taking a blood sample and testing for the presence of antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Generally speaking, antibodies may be found 2 weeks after infection. Scientists are still unsure of how long these antibodies remain in the bloodstream and whether/for how long they confer immunity to redeveloping COVID-19.

The FitnessGenes COVID-19 saliva test is a PCR test. It assesses whether you are currently carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It does NOT assess whether you have had COVID-19 in the past.

No – this test only shows whether a person currently has COVID-19 and is carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the time of testing.

If you receive a negative result, it is impossible to tell whether you previously had COVID-19 and now carry antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. An antibody test is required to find this information.

A "Negative" result means that were most likely NOT infected with coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) when you provided your saliva sample, and can give the virus to others.

A "Positive" result means that you were most likely infected with coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) when you provided your saliva sample, and can give the virus to others.

An "Unclear - inconclusive" result means that the test may have only partially detected the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in your saliva, but the signal did not meet the criteria to be confirmed as a positive result.

An "Unclear - failed" result means that we were unable to process your saliva sample at our laboratory. This may be because the sample was contaminated (for example, by food or drink consumed beforehand) or because not enough biological material was collected.

UPDATE: Regulations now state that all private COVID-19 test providers are mandated by law to report test results to Public Health England. This includes personal data on the person being tested, to enable individuals who test positive to be effectively transferred into the National Test and Trace system.
